Amethyst is a part of the Quartz crystal family. The Amethyst crystals grow in a trigonal formation and are very durable. This crystal has a Mohs hardness of 7. You can find Amethyst in a pale lilac, to a deep rich violet, but this piece falls in the middle of the color scale.
As you can see, there a piece of white Calcite that has formed also on this Amethyst specimen. Calcite is a mineral made of calcium carbonate. Calcite comes in many colors such as white, clear, blue, green, orange, honey, pink, and red.
