In order for these teeth to fossilize, they must fall out and eventually sink to the seafloor and then become covered by sediment. Rapid burial is very important for fossilization for many reasons. First, the sediment protects the shark teeth from different types of weathering, and abrasion that can occur if they were exposed to just the water and currents. Them becoming buried and covered up limit's the exposure to oxygen and bacteria, which is responsible for decay. The process of fossilization is a very slow process, that can take thousands of years. In the case of shark’s teeth, they are preserved through a process known as permineralization. Which occurs as water seeps down through the sediments and over the teeth.
