Black obsidian is frequently cut into a flint in the shape of an arrowhead. It is an excellent specimen for rock tumbling.

How is black obsidian made/formed?  Black obsidian is formed from magma.  It is an ingenuous rock.  You will note that there appears to be a film outside the rock.  When it is cut or broken, you will see the shiny interior.   It can also be polished and or tumbled.
