The word Garnet is said to come from Gernet meaning “dark red” and the word “Granatus'' which means grain or seed, because of its resemblance to a Pomegranate. Traditionally, the Garnet category of minerals is composed of 6 different sub-minerals: Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartine, Andradite, Grossular, and Uvaroite. Deposits of Garnets can be found all over the world, with large specimens coming out of our old home state of Connecticut in the United States.
Garnets have historically been regarded as a gemstone that has been said to help with hemorrhages, inflammatory diseases, and the suppression of anger. Doctors lived by a saying “similia similibus curantu”, which means “like is cured by like”. So, for ailments that pertained to blood, Garnet was often prescribed. Asian tribes also took it a step further by using small Garnets as bullets, because they believed that they would cause more harm than a regular one.
