How to dig for crystals in tailings

1. What You Will Find

Before you start digging, consider that your dig will not be limited to finding points.  There will be clusters as well.  The quality will be milky to clear. We don't want you to arrive with the expectation that your dig will be limited to unearthing what you want.  The earth produces what it produces.  Clusters will resemble clumps of dirt when extracted from the earth.  Knowing what to look for will help you identify what you have unearthed more easily.

2. Bring the Right Tools

Ensure you have the necessary tools for crystal digging, including a hand garden shovel, gloves, and a bucket to hold your finds.  Having the right equipment will make your digging experience more efficient and enjoyable.  Our gift shop also sells tools. 

a. Consider bringing a wagon to carry your tools and finds.

b. A canopy helps during the summer, as there is no shade in the digging area.

c. An ice chest can be taken to the digging area (no glass)

3. Dress Appropriately

Wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. The mining area can be rugged, so it's essential to dress appropriately for the terrain.  Keep in mine the dirt will stain your clothing and shoes.

4. Follow the Rules

Respect the rules and guidelines set by Ron Coleman Mining to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for yourself and others.  Stay within designated digging areas and follow any instructions provided by staff.

5. Stay Hydrated

Crystal digging can be physically demanding, so be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. It's important to take breaks and listen to your body to prevent exhaustion.  Don't forget a water bowl if you are bringing a pet.  Bring a canopy to protect yourself from the sun.

6. Be Patient

Finding crystals takes time and patience, so don't get discouraged if you don't strike it rich right away. DIg from the bottom of the piles so that the dirt and crystals fall toward you.  Take your time, if the area you are digging is not productive, move to another area, and enjoy the process of discovery. If the area you are digging is fruitful, stay there until it plays out. 

7. Respect the Environment

Leave the area as you found it by properly disposing of any trash or debris. If you have brought a pet, be sure to clean up any waste.
