What Tools To Bring When You Dig For Crystals:

Bring a small garden shovel, trowel, or weeding tool, and garden gloves to protect your fingers from cuts when you are digging for crystals. You are welcome to bring a wagon, ice chest, and canopy for your comfort. Also, consider getting a newspaper or baggies to separate small points so they do not chip.

What to look for when digging for crystals

Find the place you want to dig and start at the bottom.  Pulling the dirt towards you so that what is above the area you are working slowly tumbles toward you.  The crystals are most likely packed with dirt, so be sure to use your thumb and forefinger to rub it off.  A crystal cluster might look like a packed ball of mud.  Please review what you find before you discard it.  People have been known to walk away from a great find.  If you have been digging for 10 minutes without finding a crystal, move to another area.  On the other hand, if you see crystals, stay in your spot until you've fished them all out.

If you see something that looks like black glass, it's a clear crystal.  Take it home and wash it off.

If you are not getting dirty, you are not digging for crystals.  It is a messy job, and it is terrific!

Another tip: don't plan your trip around the fresh-dirt schedule.  The reason fresh dirt is mentioned so much is that it's not at all compacted, making it the easiest time to find crystals.  It has nothing to do with a successful crystal-digging adventure.
