Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz that has become one of the most popular and well-known crystals in the mineral kingdom. Amethyst gains its color from gamma irradiation and trace amounts of Iron. This crystal gained its name from the Greek word "Amethystos" which translates to "not intoxicated". 

In many ancient texts, Amethyst is regarded as a stone that when worn, allows the user to avoid intoxication. However, there is speculation that the reason this myth came about was due to a misidentification. Some believe that the Amethyst was actually Red Garnet.
